The concept behind TasteCamp is simple: it’s impossible to taste the best of an entire region in one weekend, but we can certainly try. I have enjoyed past TasteCamp experiences and was thrilled to attend this year’s event in the beautiful Hudson Valley, a few hours north of New York City.

I had the privilege of attending the great wine writers’ conference known as TasteCamp last weekend in New York State’s beautiful Hudson Valley, an hour or two north of New York City. I was lucky to visit the beautiful Glenelly estate in 2011, and since I don’t often find their wines locally, I was thrilled when Cape Classics sent this exciting blend from the cool and challenging 2008 vintage to which I’m pretty partial.

After years of attempting to accumulate all the wine knowledge I can without any certification or coursework, I signed myself up for the WSET Level 3 course and exam. It’s partly because I miss being in school and partly because industry friends have spoken highly of the WSET program, but mostly because I’ve been aware for a long time that there are gaps in my knowledge big enough to drive a harvester through.

We officially opened to the public at Mitchell Vineyard on Tuesday, with a busy day full of excited customers looking to try their hands at St. Croix, la crescent, and prairie star grapes, as well as some (surprisingly ripe) marquette and a few other varietals. It was an exhausting day, but the energy in the air was beautiful––as was the weather, which has since turned unseasonably cold.
